Arsene Wenger says that his players would not allow the recent 4-0 win over Watford to start dreaming too much.
Arsenal have brought down the deficit to table leaders Leicester City to just nine points. Even though this is still a considerable amount given that there are only six matches left, Arsenal players have recently been sounding confident about winning the title from this position. Wenger has seen numerous failures for his team in this regard. He has urged the stars to keep their feet on the ground.
A win against Watford, who have been switched off in the league ever since reaching the FA Cup semi-final, is unlikely to mean anything in the context of the league title if Leicester keep on winning the title. Wenger also said that the club also needs to be aware of the chasing pack. This includes Manchester City, Manchester United, and West Ham. They are vying for the third spot which is currently occupied by Arsenal. The Gunners will be able to qualify for the Champions League automatically should they retain this position. As a result, it holds a significant importance over the fourth spot, which would require a play-off in order to reach the group stages of the European competition.
“We have to be realistic and just prepare for the next game and not dream too much. When I say be realistic we have to look behind, over our shoulders, as well.Manchester City, Manchester United, West Ham are chasing. Let’s look over our shoulders and also chase [those ahead] if we can. I feel we want to win our games and see what happens. It is too difficult to say any more than that. We have only one target now,” said the Arsenal manager, who has been criticised for his failure to win a league title in more than a decade.
